The Grey
We saw The Grey last night, and as I’d heard, it was markedly better than the usual shit that gets dumped into the January-March window. Not amazing, but an ambitious and decent movie, with some real effort put into it by everyone involved and absolutely nothing wrong with it. A solid B+.
AO Scott in the NYT gave the movie a 90 review and said “It’s a fine, tough little movie,...

I love that they are trying to explain why this moment is so incredible. It’s so hard to explain incredible feats of video gaming to people who don’t know the games.
But the article falls short in its explanation, because while all the things said are true, Daigo still had to parry each individual kick of the super with 1/60th of a second precision. Any one of them mis-timed, and he...

A New Mexico woman called the state police to report that she had been the victim of an Internet scam. The police told her they couldn’t come right away. She asked them to call before showing up at her house. They didn’t. Instead, an officer arrived while she wasn’t home, ignored the woman’s “Beware of Dog” sign, hopped the woman’s fence … and then killed her dog.

Tesla responds to the “bricking” article. Basically, yeah it’ll brick, but you gotta be truly neglecting it for that to happen, and you can “brick” a gas car by being similarly neglectful.

Interesting! Fascinating experiment, I can’t wait to see how this turns out. And, with a free download, yeah, I’d definitely check out Killzone 3 multiplayer, which I never would have done before.

Diluting Miranda →
What I find the most creepy about Miranda dilution, and I never see anyone mention it, is that who the hell understands the Miranda warning? Everyone gets read the Miranda warning, and yet almost no one seems to understand that it means they don’t have to say anything; that they in fact SHOULD NOT say anything. Not a word. Is Mirandizing criminals really the bottleneck in police work? I have...

Google’s recent futzing and fussiness around the design of basic, long-established elements lately has had me actually thinking very deeply about whether to stop using Chrome and other Google properties. Their privacy bullshit doesn’t help either.
